Lamp Diode vs. 3 in 1 SMT (Surface Mount) Diode

Today, lamp diodes (left picture) are the most common for outdoor displays and the SMT 3 in 1 diode (right picture) is the most common for indoor displays. Indoor displays usually require a closer viewing distance so the SMT 3 in 1 diode technology is by far the best choice. There is some debate as to whether or not a SMT 3 in 1 diode can or should be used in an outdoor display. Here are some items to consider:

• The SMT 3 in 1 diode is more susceptible to degradation by environmental conditions if not completely sealed.
  
• Lamp diodes are brighter and longer lasting due to the protection provided by it's thick resin surroundings.
  
• A lamp diode 10mmE7 display from Multimedia LED is usually just more than half the cost of a 10mm SMT 3 in 1 display and provides a similar image from 30 - 40 feet viewing distance.
  
• The lamp diode 10mmE7 can also provide a display life of almost double.
  
• Most outdoor applications are seen from beyond 30 feet, so the cost benefit needs to be considered.
